Tips On How to Communicate With Someone with Hearing Loss

Communicating with someone with hearing loss can be difficult for many people, especially for those who do not know how to most effectively communicate with those with hearing loss. We at Carefect Home Care Services understand how difficult and frustrating the communication process can be, and would like to share some tips to help make things easier for both parties. The most important thing to always keep in mind though is to try not to lose your temper or get too frustrated because it is not their fault that they are having difficulty understanding you and you can easily fix the communication problems by following a few simple tips.

The first thing you should do when communicating with someone who suffers from hearing loss is call their name before you start talking. Doing this is the best way to ensure that they know you are actually talking to them. People without hearing loss might be able to hear you from across the room or from another room, but people who suffer from hearing loss might not even know you are talking to them unless you call their name or get their attention before speaking. Getting their attention before talking is a good way to keep yourself from having to repeat the beginning of what you were saying to them. Be sure that you maintain eye contact while talking so that you will keep their focus on you during the conversation.

When it comes to selecting a place for conversation, you should choose a well-lit and quiet area. Being in a well-lit area makes it easier for the person you are talking with to see your face. This is very important because many people who suffer from hearing loss rely on reading lips to help them understand people. If your face is not easily visible, they will have a harder time understanding what you are saying. You should also choose somewhere that is quiet and does not have a lot of excess background noise. People with hearing loss are often very sensitive to loud noises, so they will have a hard time hearing and understanding you if there is a lot of loud noises in the background, not to mention it can be a bit distracting for both of you.

Once you start talking to your loved one, be sure to keep your hands away from your face and mouth while you are talking. As we previously mentioned, people with hearing loss often rely on lip reading, which can be hard when you are covering your mouth while talking. If you are talking to someone with hearing loss while you are eating somewhere, be sure that you do not talk with your mouth full as that makes it harder for them to read your lips and to understand what you are trying to say. You should also avoid smoking or applying lipstick while talking because that makes it harder for the other person to see your lips and mouth.

One of the most common mistake that is made when people speak to those with hearing impairment is shouting. When talking to someone who suffers from hearing loss you should make sure that you speak in a normal, even voice. You should avoid shouting because it distorts sounds and makes it hard to understand you. You should also be sure that you are not speaking too fast or too slow since this can also cause difficulties for those with hearing problems. If you want to make sure that you are being understood, you can try pausing in between the sentences to give them time to process instead of trying to slow your speech down.

If you find that you have to repeat yourself a lot, you can try rephrasing what you are saying instead of just repeating it several times. Sometimes people who suffer from hearing loss have trouble making out certain sounds or words, so if they cannot understand what you are saying you can try rephrasing it and using different words. This is a helpful technique as sometimes those without hearing loss do not realize that the person they are speaking to is not only having trouble hearing but also having trouble making out the words and sounds.

If all else fails, you can always write down important information for your loved one instead of telling it to them or have them repeat it back to you so that you know they got it right. Many people do this with directions, phone numbers, or other important information just to make sure that there is no confusion or miscommunication. Following these tips should greatly improve your communication with your loved one with hearing loss and help prevent frustration and miscommunication for both parties.
